Concept Explanation

Radius Chord Secant Tangent Difference

Chord:

A chord of a circle is a straight line segment whose endpoints both lie on the circle. or we can say the line segment joining the two points on a circle is called a chord. In the figure AB is a Chord.

Secant:

A line which intersects the circle at two distinct points is called a secant of the circle. A secant line, or just secant, is the infinite line extension of a chord. In the figure XY is a Secant

Diameter:

A chord which passes through the centre is the diameter of the circle. It is equal to twice the radius. In the figure PQ is the diameter. The diameter is the longest chord of the circle. We can draw as many diameters of the circle as we require. All the diameters are of equal length.

Tangent:

It is a straight line that just touches the circle. In the figure MN is the tangent

Difference between Secant Tangent:

A secant is a line that intersects the circle in two different points and a tangent is a line that intersects the circle in exactly one point, called the point of tangency.
